This is a nothing film - one that will leave you cold afterwards and one that you will forget before you even get home. ““Raaz 3″ is neither scary nor thrilling. Esha Gupta has one standard, scared-out-of-my-wits expression throughout the film. Emraan Hashmi pretty much sleepwalks through his role.

Bhatt, of course, uses some skin show, an Emraan Hashmi kissing scene and plenty of song-and-dance to distract the viewer from the horror element, but it is all for nothing.īipasha Basu tries a bit too hard to act crazy, but it’s nonetheless effective. Set against the backdrop of the glitz, lights, glamour and back-stabbing cruelty of the entertainment world, a fading movie diva Shanaya turns to black. The 3D is completely ineffective and why it was employed is a mystery. Unfortunately, not much of it is scary and apart from making you jump out of your seat a couple of times, “Raaz 3” won’t provide any more thrills or chills. But Shanaya is past listening, almost bordering on the insane.īhatt employs all the clichés of a horror film - dead bodies, graveyards in the middle of the night, black magic, maggot-infested ghosts and much more. Hands shoot out at her throat from television screens, people die, there are mysterious sounds and doors creaking and even a lengthy scene that involves thousands of flying cockroaches, all of which is in 3D.Īt some point, Aditya realises that what he is doing is beyond crazy and tells Shanaya he cannot go on.

Of course, any sane person would have told Shanaya to seek professional help, but not our man.Īditya proceeds to do as told and Sanjana’s nightmares start. Enter Aditya Arora (Emraan Hashmi), Shanaya’s seemingly meek boyfriend who is apparently so indebted to her for giving him a break as director that he willingly agrees to poison Sanjana. Of course, in order to this, someone needs to keep spiking Sanjana’s drinking water with a few drops of cursed liquid. So much so, that she agrees to enlist the help of a spirit, who promises to torture Sanjana (Esha Gupta). And by desperate, I mean really desperate. When a younger actress begins to upstage her, she gets desperate. Trust Vikram Bhatt to add ghosts, flying cockroaches and strange graveyard rituals to that concoction to give you the horror that is ''Raaz 3''.īipasha Basu plays Shanaya Shekhar, a top actress who is so obsessed with her success she will do whatever it takes to hold on to it. Whether meeting a malevolent spirit wearing expensive sunglasses, seductively controlling her prey, or bringing her scheme to an operatically violent close, she gives"Raaz 3" its defiantly retro flamboyance. An ageing actress, her almost obsessive desire to stay at the top and destroy her rivals – all of this sounds like fodder for a good drama, and it is a theme that has been explored several times.

But when their romance exponentially ratchets up Basu’s desire to punish in the second half, it does lead to some agreeably high-strung set pieces, like an imagined swarm of insects emerging from bathroom drainpipes, and a frenzied climax that cross-cuts between a morgue and the spirit world.īut it’s Basu who nails the gothic flash of it all, hardly needing the patina of 3-D to conjure a slinky throwback to fiendishly carnal temptresses of movies past. Under Vikram Bhatt’s no-frills direction, the inevitable uh-oh love story between accomplice and victim feels perfunctory - and Gupta and Hashmi are earnest yet dull. If your taste for cheesy movie horror has been ill-fed by the current vogue for moody found-footage pieces, the 3-D Bollywood entry"Raaz 3" - forged from equal parts"All About Eve,” Orpheus and the blood-sex oeuvre of Hammer and Brian De Palma - could pick up the slack.įelicitously erotic Bipasha Basu brings some old-school witchy vengeance to the part of Shanaya, a fading leading lady so unnerved by the rising prominence of a sweetly sexy newcomer (Esha Gupta) that she calls on black magic spirits - and the help of her director boyfriend (Emraan Hashmi) - to drive her rival insane.
